Attorneys Provide Free Legal Services To First Responders

July 31, 2024

The Oklahoma Bar Association’s Wills for Heroes program serves those who serve their communities by offering no-cost legal assistance in the areas of wills and estate planning to first responders and emergency personnel. Oklahoma lawyers will be providing this service at the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Business Enterprise Center in Weatherford on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Appointments may be made in advance by sending an email to WillsForHeroes@okbar.org.

Participating first responders and their spouse or partner should complete and print a separate Estate Planning Questionnaire form before meeting with the Wills for Heroes attorney. A form-filled PDF is available on the OBA website. Download the Estate Planning Questionnaire.

Attorneys will help prepare wills for first responders and their spouses. This includes all emergency and volunteer police officers, firefighters, paramedics, corrections and probation officers, and veterans. The wills will help first responders make determinations about what will happen to their assets and family in the event of their deaths. The program is offered as a volunteer service of the OBA’s Young Lawyers Division. Additional information is available on the OBA website at www.okbar.org/willsforheroes.

Enid attorney Taylor C. Venus, who is coordinating the weekend’s program, said, “People who serve others in this capacity deserve to have these critical needs met. We proudly offer this support to these heroes, ensuring their families are safeguarded in case of emergencies. The bar association invites all emergency and volunteer first responders in western Oklahoma to take advantage of this opportunity.”

The 18,000-member Oklahoma Bar Association, headquartered in Oklahoma City, was created by the Oklahoma Supreme Court to advance the administration of justice and to foster and maintain learning, integrity, competence, public service and high standards of conduct among Oklahoma’s legal community.
