Serving the Underserved – Limited Scope Services & More – Cedar

Speaker: Julie Bays and Katie Dilks

In June 2017, the Oklahoma Supreme Court adopted District Court Rule 33, outlining how lawyers could provide clients with limited scope legal services such as drafting pleadings for a client appearing pro se to present to a court for approval. The idea was for some legal services to become more affordable because the lawyer avoided the time at the courthouse. While many discuss access to justice challenges in terms of rule changes or lawyers providing free legal services, this rule illustrates how access to justice initiatives can decrease consumer costs while also providing revenue to the lawyer.
