CIVITAS: An International Exchange Program

OVERVIEW

The Civitas Exchange Program provides international leaders in civic education opportunities to learn from and assist others in improving education for democracy. Partnerships between domestic and international organizations have been created to promote the exchange of civic education practices in teacher training and student programs among existing and emerging democracies. Independent research within the partnerships measures the effects of their practices within the different program venues. Partner organizations collaborate to create new education programs, hone the implementation of existing ones, and exchange ideas on democracy.

Civitas is administered by the Center for Civic Education and is funded by the United States Department of Education under the Education for Democracy Act approved by the United States Congress. LRE currently participates in one grant-funded partnership, while a second partnership has been proposed.
