Oklahoma Bar Association Board of Governors met at the Holiday Inn
Express in Jenks on Friday, May 18, 2007.
REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT
President Beam reported Ben Stein has been signed as
the OBA Annual Meeting speaker. During the past month he worked with
Linda Thomas on the upcoming Leadership Conference, responded to
many e-mails regarding SB 507, met with Executive Director Williams
on numerous occasions and attended the ABA GP/SOLO Division spring
meeting in Washington, D.C., where he received an award for his February
president's message. He attended the regional YLD events hosted by
the OBA, OBF trustees meeting, Oklahoma County Bar Association Law
Day luncheon, Ask A Lawyer phone bank at OETA in Oklahoma City, Pittsburg
County Bar Association Law Day dinner, Annual Meeting meeting and
New Lawyer Experience seminar in Tulsa. He spoke at the new admittees
swearing-in ceremony and attended the reception following the event.
He also spoke at the Seminole County Law Day luncheon. President
Beam shared information about the October 2007 board meeting in Custer
County.
REPORT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT
Vice President Dawson reported he has requested from the general
counsel more detail on reports for information purposes.
REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT-ELECT
President-Elect Conger reported he attended the April Board of Governors
meeting, Access to Justice Committee meeting, Law Day luncheon in
Tulsa, admissions ceremony at the State Capitol, OBF trustee meeting
and OCU School of Law commencement, at which Judge Jerome Holmes
was the speaker. He chaired a Bar Center Facilities Committee meeting.
He spoke at the OCU law school graduation reception and at the OCU
Hatton W. Summers scholars annual brunch. He also met with Executive
Director Williams, who briefed him on the duties of the OBA president.
REPORT OF THE PAST PRESIDENT
Past President Grimm reported he attended the Tulsa
County Bar Association Law Day luncheon, Judge Frizzell's swearing-in
investiture and Tulsa Title & Probate Lawyers meeting.
REPORT OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Executive Director Williams reported he attended the board/YLD event
at Remington Park, Advertising Task Force meeting, Supreme Court
Planning Task Force meeting, at least six meetings with the architect
and staff on building plans, Tri-County bar dinner in Idabel, Ann
Weathers going-away party, new lawyer admission ceremony, new lawyer
reception, Tulsa County Bar Association Law Day event, Seminole County
Law Day event in Wewoka, Pittsburg County Law Day banquet, Pickens
County seminar in Ardmore, Annual Meeting meeting, meetings with
President-Elect Conger regarding planning for next year, a meeting
with Court Administrator Mike Evans regarding online/computer issues,
MCLE Commission meeting, Board of Governors social event and Law
Day phone bank at OETA.
BOARD MEMBER REPORTS
Governor Bates reported she attended the new attorney admission
ceremony at the State Capitol and reception that followed, Oklahoma
County Bar Association Law Day luncheon, Cleveland County Bar Association
Law Day luncheon and CLE program, OCBA Awards Committee meeting and
OBA State Legal Referral Service Task Force meeting at the Bar Center.
Governor Caudle reported he attended the April Board
of Governors meeting, Faculty House board luncheon, Comanche County
Bar Association meeting, CLE and luncheon, April Clients' Security
Fund meeting at the bar center and Pittsburg County social and Law
Day banquet featuring Lt. Governor Jari Askins. He helped staff the
Ask A Lawyer Comanche County Law Day program and participated in
coordinating the Comanche County Law Day banquet at which Justice
Watt presented the professionalism award to Judge Allen McCall. He
said Judge Lewis gave an excellent Law Day speech at the event. He
also coordinated the Comanche County Law Day golf tournament and
chaired the May 9 State Legal Referral Service Task Force meeting
at the bar center.
Governor Dirickson reported she attended the April board meeting
and dinner at Remington Park, Custer County Bar Association monthly
meeting and Custer County Law Day event.
Governor Hogan reported he attended the April board meeting, Faculty
House board luncheon, Pittsburg County Bar Association monthly meeting,
Pittsburg County Ask A Lawyer program, Pittsburg County Law Day events
and dinner, and Tri-County Bar Association Law Day dinner at the
Idabel Country Club.
Governor Kennemer reported he attended the board dinner at Remington
Park with the YLD Board of Directors, April Board of Governors meeting,
first meeting of the OBA Advertising Task Force, Fastcase training
session, Seminole/Hughes County Bar luncheon, Seminole County Law
Day forum and luncheon that was attended by seven Oklahoma Supreme
Court justices, a federal judge and many dignitaries including OBA
President Stephen Beam, who gave the keynote speech. He also attended
the Task Force to Create a Uniform Residential Sales Contract - OKC/Oklahoma
Real Estate Commission meeting and State Legal Referral Service Task
Force meeting at the Bar Center.
Governor Reheard reported she attended the April board meeting,
OBA/YLD event at Remington Park and Pittsburg County Law Day banquet.
She also participated in the McIntosh County Ask A Lawyer community
service project.
Governor Souter reported he attended the Board of Governors dinner
at Remington Park, April board meeting and Creek County Bar Association
meeting.
Governor Stockwell reported she attended the April Board of Governors
meeting,
Cleveland County Bar Association luncheon and CLE, Cleveland County
Law Day reception, and Cleveland County Bench and Bar meeting. She
also participated in the Cleveland County Bar Association Ask A Lawyer
project.
REPORT OF THE YOUNG LAWYERS DIVISION
Governor Camp reported he spoke at the admissions ceremony and shared
information about upcoming YLD socials. The board commended him for
his effort in calling every new lawyer before the ceremony. He also
co moderated the morning session of the ABA/YLD Affiliate Outreach
Program in Oklahoma City, chaired the April YLD Board of Directors
meeting, participated in a Wills for Heroes planning teleconference
and hosted the new admittee happy hour at the Kampai Lounge in Tulsa.
He attended the OBA Civil Procedure Committee meeting, Tulsa County
Bar Association Law Day luncheon and investiture of Judge Gregory
Frizzell at the U.S. Courthouse in Tulsa.
REPORT OF THE SUPREME COURT LIAISON
Justice Taylor reported he was unable to attend the Creek County
Bar Association dinner for the board because he was speaking to the
Payne County Bar Association at its Law Day dinner. He participated
in the recent new lawyer experience seminar offered by the OBA. He
commended the program and the effort to reach out to new lawyers.
REPORT OF THE GENERAL COUNSEL
Although he was not able to attend the meeting, General Counsel
Murdock submitted a status report of the Professional Responsibility
Commission and OBA disciplinary matters.
BAR CENTER RENOVATIONS
Executive Director Williams reported the Bar Center Facilities Committee
has received numerous building plan drafts and a meeting has been
held with employees to be involved in the move. The week of July
16 is projected for the physical move to modular space, and he shared
details. Some new phone equipment has been delivered.
POLICY ON LOGO AND TRADEMARK
Executive Director Williams reported that he and Past President
Grimm drafted a proposed policy. The board approved the policy as
amended.
SB 507
President Beam reported a letter to Gov. Henry was
sent, and the governor vetoed the bill. President Beam said he has
received about 65 e-mails regarding the board's action encouraging
the veto, and the majority were supportive of the board's action.
REPORT OF THE COMMUNICATIONS TASK FORCE
The board tabled consideration of the task force report until next
month.
RESOLUTION FOR CREEK COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION
The board voted to issue a resolution of appreciation to the Creek
County Bar Association for hospitality shown to the Board of Governors.
PROFESSIONALISM COMMITTEE SURVEY
Tulsa attorney Sharon Corbitt reported she and Judge Jane Wiseman
chair a subcommittee of the Professionalism Committee. The subcommittee
drafted a survey for OBA members regarding professionalism among
the bench and bar. The draft of the survey was sent to President
Grimm in November 2006. Judge Wiseman, a Bench and Bar Committee
member, has been working with the Professionalism Committee on this
project. Public Information Director Manning was asked to research
the cost of mailing the survey to all members compared to the cost
of offering it electronically. The board voted to table action.
APPOINTMENTS
The board approved the following appointments:
Professional Responsibility Tribunal - reappoint Robert S. Dobbs,
Oklahoma City; appoint Patrick T. Cornell, Clinton; Lorenzo T. Collins,
Ardmore; Stephen R. McNamara, Tulsa; and Cody Hodgen, Woodward, to
three-year terms (expires 06/30/10)
Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board - nomination of
G. Gail Strickland, Oklahoma City (currently serving), to a two-year
term (expires 06/30/09).
ASK A LAWYER 2007 RESULTS
Public Information Director Manning reported the committee was disappointed
in the results of its outreach to Hispanic Oklahomans and improving
those results next year will be a goal. She said the good news is
364 attorneys in 49 counties volunteered to give free legal advice
for the annual Law Day free legal advice project. They helped 2,430
people who called in. Compared to 2006, this year eight more counties
and 140 more lawyers participated, and they increased the number
of people helped by about 300. Many newspaper clippings from across
the state were passed around for board members to view.
INFORMATION ITEMS
President Beam reported the Women in Law event with Hillary Clinton
mentioned at the previous board meeting is tentative. He also shared
information about the Leadership Conference and the Thursday evening
dinner that board members are invited to before the August board
meeting.
NEXT MEETING
The board will meet at Tanglewood Resort as part of the Solo and
Small Firm Conference at noon on Friday, June 22, 2007. |
