Ardmore Attorney Makes Time for Pro Bono Work

Greg Johnson has been practicing law in Ardmore since 1986, and since that time he has been a good friend to Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma. “He is always willing to help when called upon,” says Brenda Segler, pro bono coordinator for the Carter County office of Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma.

This past year, Mr. Johnson co-counseled a merit protection action with legal aid and worked tirelessly for the client in an attempt to get her reinstated to her position.

“There was a lot at stake for our client. She was close to retirement. She needed representation. It was going to put a strain on the Ardmore office, and legal aid didn't have the expertise to take this case. That is when Greg graciously stepped in and agreed to help,” Ms. Segler says.

Mr. Johnson makes a point of advocating for those who need a voice in our legal system. He says, “As an attorney, if I see a wrong, then I ought to try to help.” He usually has at least one pro bono case that he is working for legal aid and quickly adds, “This is not a burden at all. There are so many attorneys who do more.”

Greg Johnson also performs pro bono work as a way to give back to the profession that has given so much to him.

“There are any number of attorneys in Ardmore who I can call on, and do call on,” he says. Mr. Johnson relates the story of fellow Ardmore attorney James English, who called him right before his first jury trial and asked if he could help. “I let him,” Johnson states. “This is just one example of the collegiality of the Ardmore attorneys and the profession that I am blessed to be a part of.”

In addition to his case work for Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, Mr. Johnson also acted as the organization’s representative for United Way of South Central Oklahoma. He also serves on the board of directors for Ardmore Habitat for Humanity.

Greg Johnson is being recognized for his contributions to the Ardmore community and to Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma. If you know an attorney who should be recognized for his or her pro bono efforts, please let us know. Submissions should be forwarded to probono@okbar.org or Pro Bono Services Subcommittee, c/o Judith Maute, University of Oklahoma College of Law, 300 W. Timberdell Road, Norman, OK 73019-0701.
