Governor Receives Award of Appreciation at OBA Annual Meeting
Nov. 18, 2010
Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry was recognized by the Oklahoma Bar Association at its 106th Annual Meeting, held in Tulsa this week.
OBA President Allen Smallwood presented Gov. Henry with the Award of Appreciation for his hard work on behalf of all the people of Oklahoma, compassion for low-income Oklahomans and dedication to the rule of law.
“For the last eight years, Gov. Henry has stood tall for his profession and the people of the state of Oklahoma,” President Smallwood said. “Thank you, Gov. Henry, for your years of public service.”
Gov. Henry is wrapping up his second four-year gubernatorial term. Before being elected in 2002, he served 10 years in the Oklahoma State Senate, chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee and serving as vice-chair of the Senate Economic Development Committee. Prior to that, he practiced law in Shawnee with his father.
Gov. Henry began his tenure during the worst revenue crisis in state history, but was instrumental in creating a bipartisan agreement among legislative leaders that balanced the budget without raising taxes or making massive cuts in education and health care.
He helped passed the Insure Oklahoma Program, a public-private partnership that helps small businesses provide health care coverage for their employees. He also helped pushed for tougher methamphetamine laws in the state.
The 16,000-member Oklahoma Bar Association, headquartered in Oklahoma City, was created by the Oklahoma Supreme Court to advance the administration of justice and to foster and maintain learning, integrity, competence, public service and high standards of conduct among Oklahoma’s legal community.
