Sending Out an S.O.S.

Senior Citizens to Receive Free Legal Advice

Members of the OBA Young Lawyers Division will be offering free legal advice to senior citizens in Muskogee on . These services will be provided from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Muskogee Public Library, 801 West Okmulgee.

Serving our Seniors (S.O.S.) is a project in which lawyers will be counseling low-income seniors with their estate planning needs at no cost. Volunteer lawyers will work with individuals by counseling them and drawing the proper documents to fulfill their needs. Documents provided will be a last will and testament, durable power of attorney and living will.

“It is important for people to plan ahead to determine who will make legal and health care decisions for them should they become unable to do it,” said Young Lawyers Division Chair Roy Tucker of Muskogee. “It is also important that they determine to whom they want their estate to go to upon their deaths.”

These free services are available to all people ages 65 and older who have an individual monthly income of $1,670 or joint income of $2,247 or less. Individuals are encouraged to fill out a questionnaire prior to the day of service and take the questionnaire and some form of picture identification to the event. Copies of the questionnaire are available at the Muskogee Library, Muskogee Senior Center and online at www.okbar.org.

“The value of these legal services is about $500, so it’s well worth taking advantage of this special community service project,” Mr. Tucker said.

Muskogee Mayor John Tyler Hammons has proclaimed April as “Citywide Serving our Seniors Month,” and this event is part of that initiative.

The Serving Our Seniors project in Muskogee is the first of similar events that will be offered in other cities around the state.  Chairpersons of the statewide YLD project are attorneys Amber Peckio Garrett of Tulsa and Bryon Will of Oklahoma City.
