Gurich Sworn in to High Court

Supreme Court Justice Noma Gurich took her seat on the court in a surprise move Feb. 16, 2011.Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Noma Gurich has reported for duty at the State Capitol. District Judge Jerry Bass administered the oath of office to Justice Gurich Feb. 15 during a small ceremony at her church.

Justice Gurich, who was appointed to the post in January by then-Gov. Brad Henry, postponed taking the oath until the Supreme Court resolved a lawsuit involving the Judicial Nominating Commission. The court decided Tuesday the commission was comprised constitutionally and the decision to appoint Gurich was ruled valid.

A formal swearing in ceremony will be held in the Supreme Court chambers within the next few weeks.

Justice Gurich is only the third woman in state history to serve on the Oklahoma Supreme Court.

Justice Gurich replaces Justice Marian Opala, who died late last year.
