The
Center for Civic Education?s fourteenth annual
World Congress on Civic Education was held in
Jakarta, Indonesia from July 23 ? July 27, 2010.
The theme was ?Embracing Diversity and Building
Unity through Civic Education?.
The OBA was proudly represented by LRE Coordinator
Jane McConnell, along with more than 200 participants
from 58 countries and 39 US states. Oklahoma currently
works in partnership with Michigan, Colorado, the Czech
Republic, Slovakia, and the Dominican Republic.? This
international coalition of educators and stakeholders
was formed to strengthen civics education and democracy
worldwide. Participants share methods and ideas to
build effective civics education programs.

Linda Start, Michigan; Ivana Havlinova, Czech Republic;
Marcela Maslova, Slovakia; Miriam Hubova, Slovakia;
and Jane McConnell, Oklahoma, presented the session
?Comparing our Democracies: What is the Role of
Government in Solving Social Problems??.? The session
questioned government?s place in legislating controversial
issues. Political philosophies in regard to the
historical concept of limited government were explored.
Those in attendance benefited from the diversity of individuals representing a variety of cultural viewpoints.
