June 14-18, 2010, the third annual Hatton
W. Sumners Teacher Institute will be held in Tulsa.? The institute
will focus on the Foundations
of Democracy curriculum authored by the Center for Civic Education.?
This program explores the four concepts of democracy Authority, Responsibility,
Privacy, and Justice.? Morning sessions consist of lectures given
by scholars in the field of civics education.?? In the afternoon participants
take part in classroom applications conducted by program mentors.
On
the final day educators learn about the Representative
Democracy in America project.? The project
mission is ?to reinvigorate and educate Americans
on the critical relationship between government
and the people it serves?. ?A wealth of supplemental
resources for teaching civics education will
be made available to teachers in attendance.
Due to generous funding from the Hatton W. Sumners
Foundation, the conference is offered at no charge with all expenses paid for attendees.? In addition educators receive
a free classroom set of Foundations of Democracy textbooks.
