State Bar Association to Reimburse Client Losses
More than two dozen Oklahomans who lost money to deceased or dishonest former attorneys will be reimbursed by the Oklahoma Bar Association. The association announced its Clients’ Security Fund will pay more than $100,000 in claims to 23 clients of 15 former attorneys whose dishonest acts led to the losses.

Applicants for February 2016 Oklahoma Bar Exam
The Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct impose on each member of the bar the duty to aid in guarding against the admission of candidates unfit or unqualified because of deficiency in either moral character or education. To aid in that duty, the following is a list of applicants for the bar examination to be given February 23-24, 2016.

Civics Teachers Offered New Training Resources
Oklahoma’s civics and government teachers will be offered new resources and training focusing on citizens’ rights and responsibilities as a result of a new Oklahoma Bar Association initiative. The OBA’s Law-related Education outreach will offer more than $50,000 in funds to provide professional development for teachers focusing on the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Linda S. Thomas Chosen as President-Elect for State Bar Association
Bartlesville attorney Linda S. Thomas was elected to serve on the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Board of Governors as the 2016 president-elect. She will be a part of the OBA’s 17-member Board of Governors, which meets monthly and governs the association.

State Bar Approves Client Protection Measure
The Oklahoma Bar Association House of Delegates today approved a proposal to increase the dollar amount allocated to the association’s Clients’ Security Fund, a reserve of money dedicated to reimbursing victims of dishonest or deceased former attorneys. The program, previously capped at $100,000 annually, will increase yearly reimbursements as high as $175,000. The measure must now be approved by the state Supreme Court.

New Discovery Master Law Takes Effect on Nov. 1, 2015
Effective on Nov. 1, 2015, the Oklahoma Discovery Code will include a new statute that provides for discovery masters in civil litigation.1 The new statute will be codified as Section 3225.1 of the Discovery Code.

The OBA Diversity Committee is set to host its Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Diversity Awards Dinner on Oct. 15, 2015, in Oklahoma City. The event will feature a keynote address from Jabar Shumate, University of Oklahoma University Community vice president.

Changes Proposed to the Rules Governing Disciplinary Proceedings
The following are proposed changes to the Rules Governing Disciplinary Proceedings as proposed by the Professional Responsibility Commission. These changes are currently under consideration by the OBA Board of Governors. The proposed changes would give the Commission more discretion in the action it might take.

Oklahoma Attorneys Selected for Leadership Academy
Twenty-two future leaders of Oklahoma’s legal community will receive training in leadership, motivation and communication as members of the Oklahoma Bar Association Leadership Academy class of 2016. The academy participants have been selected from a pool of applicants spanning the state.

DeLacerda Elected To Judicial Nominating Commission
Attorney Melissa DeLacerda of Stillwater has been elected by her fellow lawyers to serve on the state’s Judicial Nominating Commission. She will serve as one of six lawyers on the 15-member commission, which plays a key role in the selection of Oklahoma judges.

Kick It Forward: OBA Young Lawyers Division Plans Tournament to Support Peers
The Oklahoma Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will host its first Kick It Forward Kickball Tournament Saturday, Aug. 29, at 9 a.m. at Wiley Post Park in Oklahoma City. The tournament will benefit the YLD Kick It Forward Program, which benefits lawyers in need of financial assistance by helping them pay annual membership dues.

Runoff to Determine Judicial Nomination Committee District 6 Position
No candidate garnered more than 40 percent of the vote in the race for the JNC District 6 seat. In accordance with procedures governing the elections, attorneys Melissa DeLacerda of Stillwater and J. David Ezzell of Enid will face each other in a runoff election to determine the winner. Ballots were mailed June 26 and are due back to the OBA by 5 p.m. on July 17.

Moore Student Named Top Ten Attorney at National Mock Trial Competition
Randi Mattox from Moore High School was named eighth best attorney at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Raleigh, North Carolina, May 14-16. An Oklahoma team member has not won this award in nearly 10 years, and more than 400 students competed.

Moore High School Wins State Mock Trial Competition
Moore High School defeated Owasso High School Team Darrow in the final round of competition to claim the 2015 Oklahoma High School Mock Trial Championship. The final round of competition was held Tuesday evening at the OU Law Center in Norman. The two teams argued a case that focused on an individual accused of aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon.

OBA Pilot Project to Reach Out to Less Advantaged Students
“Who wants to be a millionaire?” is the theme of a brand new OBA outreach effort targeting students likely to have trouble paying for college. The theme highlights the statistic showing workers with a college degree make on average up to $1 million more in their lifetimes than those with a high school- only education. The project consists of concentrated efforts to promote the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship program, which offers free college tuition to qualifying students.
