New OBA Master Lawyers Section  
The Master Lawyers Section will concentrate on lawyers in their “second season of service,” as they transition from full-time practice to pursue pro bono and other service opportunities, through programs that utilize the knowledge and experience of these lawyers.

Norman Attorney to Lead State Bar Board of Governors
Norman lawyer David A. Poarch Jr. will serve as the Oklahoma Bar Association’s 2015 president. He will lead the OBA’s 17-member Board of Governors, which meets monthly and governs the association. As chair-elect in 2014, Poarch succession to the top leadership position was automatic. Other election results were announced Friday at the OBA’s 110th Annual Meeting in Tulsa.

The OBA Salutes Servicemembers & Veterans
Nearly four years ago, on Veterans Day 2010, the OBA launched Oklahoma Lawyers for America’s Heroes to provide free legal advice and assistance to qualifying active duty servicemen and women and veterans. The program recently reached a milestone – more than $2.5 million in legal services have been donated by Oklahoma lawyers through the Heroes program.

2014 Mona Salyer Lambird Spotlight Award Recipients
Since 1996 the Spotlight Awards have been given annually to five women who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession and who have lighted the way for other women. The award was later renamed to honor 1996 OBA President Mona Salyer Lambird, who died in 1999, and as first woman to serve as OBA president, was one of the award’s first recipients.

MCLE Rules Changes to Take Effect
You may have read or heard about the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) Commission’s proposed change to the MCLE Rules that will eliminate the age 65 exemption from the MCLE requirements. The proposed change was approved by the Oklahoma Supreme Court on April 7, 2014, with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2015.

Hatton W. Sumners Teacher Institute 2014
June 9-13, the seventh annual Hatton W. Sumners institute, Using Civics Technology in Our Classrooms, was held at Oklahoma City University.  The Intergenerational Computer Center provided the ideal setting for teachers to explore online civic resources and classroom tools.

Holland Hall Upper School Places 14th in National Mock Trial Competition
Seven students from Holland Hall Upper School represented Oklahoma in the 2014 National High School Mock Trial Championship in Madison, Wis. May 8-10.  The team finished 14th out of 46 teams that came from across the country in addition to Guam, South Korea and the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands.

Retired Justice Rudolph Hargrave: 1925 - 2014
Retired Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Rudolph Hargrave of Wewoka died April 1, 2014. He was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Shawnee.  He attained his undergraduate degree from East Central University and received his J.D. from the OU College of Law in 1949.

Holland Hall Upper School Wins State Mock Trial Championship
Holland Hall Upper School Red Team defeated Clinton High School Gold Team in the final round of competition to claim the 2014 Oklahoma High School Mock Trial Championship. The final round of competition was held Tuesday evening at the OU Law Center in Norman.

The Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct impose on each member of the bar the duty to aid in guarding against the admission of candidates unfit or unqualified because of deficiency in either moral character or education. Tulsa Attorney to Lead State Bar Board of Governors
Nine attorneys will be sworn into the Oklahoma Bar Association Board of Governors during a ceremony Friday, Jan. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at the state Capitol. Tulsa attorney Renée DeMoss will be sworn in as president, David A. Poarch Jr. of Norman will take the oath as president-elect and Susan S. Shields of Oklahoma City will be sworn in as vice president. The ceremony takes place in the Supreme Court Ceremonial Courtroom on the second floor.
