Oklahoma Close Up
The Oklahoma Bar Association proudly hosted Oklahoma Close Up, February 20 and 21. The four day annual event gives high school students an opportunity to observe and meet representatives from all branches of Oklahoma government.
On Tuesday, February 19, participants spent the day shadowing state lawmakers and other office holders at the capitol. During the evening meal, Michael Cross, the State Capitol Bureau Chief with KOSU radio, was the keynote speaker.
The following morning, Jane McConnell, LRE Coordinator, welcomed the group to the OBA, on behalf of OBA President, James T. Stewart. Speakers for the day included Rep. Scott Inman, State Superintendent Janet Barresi, Rep. Mark McCullough , and Lt. Gov. Todd Lamb.
On February 21, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals conducted an accelerated court docket. Prior to the proceedings, attorney Brady Henderson briefed the group on the case. Afterwards students had the opportunity to question attorneys for the appellant and appellee. The speakers for Thursday were CCA Judge Gary Lumpkin, Sen. Constance Johnson, Justice John Reif, and Mark Woodward with the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Former governor George Nigh gave the keynote speech at the evening banquet.
On Friday, February 22, final sessions were conducted by Terri Watkins, Commissioners of the Land Office, Ken Miller, State Treasurer, Rep. Anastasia Pittman, and Sen. Brian Bingman.
