James Duke Logan, 82, attorney and long time resident of Vinita, died Dec. 22, 2013. An accomplished trial lawyer for more than 50 years, Duke Logan was founding partner of the Vinita law firm, Logan and Lowry LLP.

State Bar Association to Reimburse Client Losses
Several Oklahomans who lost money to deceased or dishonest former attorneys will be reimbursed by the Oklahoma Bar Association. The association announced its Clients’ Security Fund will pay more than $100,000 in claims to 21 clients of three former attorneys whose acts led to the losses.

State Bar Association to Present Diversity Awards
Six law-related individuals and organizations will be honored with Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Diversity Awards in recognition of their efforts in promoting diversity in Oklahoma. The awards will be presented at a luncheon during the annual Oklahoma Bar Association Diversity Conference Oct. 24 at the Jim Thorpe Event Center at 4040 N. Lincoln Blvd. in Oklahoma City. The conference begins at 9 a.m.; the awards luncheon begins at noon.

OBA Day of Service Reaches Across the State
The project’s goal was simple: Get attorneys into the community and have them give back, no project too big or too small. Fifty-seven projects in 52 counties involving 60 county bars, law firms, law schools and other legal groups were carried out in association with the OBA Day of Service.

Over the course of June and July, demand for the hotline and service has tapered off, leading to the service being concluded on Aug. 1, 2013.

Judicial Nominating Commission Election Results Announced

Legislature Provides Access to DNA Testing that May Prove Innocence
Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin signed a bill into law recently that will provide Oklahomans the right to DNA testing that could prove they were wrongly convicted. The legislation (HB 1068) passed unanimously through both chambers of the Oklahoma State Legislature. There was not a single dissenting vote, in committee or on the floor, in either house of the Legislature.

Tulsa Lawyer Wins National Peeps in the Law Contest
Paula J. Quillin’s legal- themed diorama entitled, “Oh the Peepanity!” earned grand prize honors in the ABA Journal Fifth Annual Peeps in the Law Contest. You know what Peeps are, right?  Those brightly colored marshmellow candies shaped into chicks, bunnies and other animals sold during the holidays. The victory was a landslide with 3,962 votes (58.34 percent of total votes). Second place earned a distance 33 percent of all votes.

Hamming it up: Oklahoma Lawyers Donate 1,400 Easter Hams to Oklahoma Families in Need
Four years ago Noble McIntyre of McIntyre Law, P.C., saw a pamphlet in his church about a program that helped provide disadvantaged families with a Thanksgiving meal.  With a desire to help families in need and access to a listserv of like-minded lawyers, he started a chain of events that led to the formation of Lawyers Against Hunger, an Oklahoma-based non-profit organization that has helped give away over 10,000 holiday meals to Oklahomans in need since its 2011 inception.

OBA Members Raise Funds for OETA
Kicking off our “Year of Stuartship,” OBA members manned the phone banks at OETA Festival on Tuesday to take donations for public television.  Members called in and donated nearly $5,000, which was presented to OETA as a check by President Jim Stuart at the end of the evening.  More donations are still pouring in.

One of the most common myths about government and politics is that there is an overabundance of lawyers in the Legislature. However, the facts do not support this myth. OBA Creates New Juvenile Law Section
Recognizing that juvenile law hasn’t been “kiddie law” for many years, Oklahoma Lawyers for Children (OLFC) petitioned OBA members at the November OBA Annual Meeting to create an OBA Juvenile Law Section. Literally within hours of drafting a petition and visiting with OBA members from across the state, practitioners, judges and OBA delegates alike recognized the need for a juvenile law section, and OLFC gathered well over the requisite number of required signatures to present the petition to the Board of Governors for consideration.

Jim Stuart Takes OBA Reins
Shawnee, Okla., is the birthplace of 2013 OBA President James T. “Jim” Stuart. It is also the place he has called home almost his entire life, with the exception of the years he spent in Edmond, where he attended college at CSU (now UCO), and Tulsa, where he graduated from the TU College of Law. His family has lived in Shawnee since 1900, and his ties to the community are so deep that he lives in a home built by his grandparents in 1928.

Postjudgment and Prejudgment Interest for 2013 Determine
POSTJUDGMENT INTEREST: The State Treasurer has certified to the Administrative Director of the Courts that the prime interest rate as listed in the first edition of the Wall Street Journal published for calendar year 2013 is 3.25 percent. In accordance with 12 O.S. §727.1 (I), the postjudgment interest rate shall be the prime interest rate plus two (2%) percentage points, which equals 5.25 percent.

In Memoriam: OBA 2008 President J. William "Bill" Conger
The Oklahoma Bar Association and Oklahoma City University School of Law has lost a great teacher, friend and colleague. J. William Conger died at his home on New Year’s Day. He was 67 years old. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel on the OCU campus.
