Human Trafficking Seminar to Educate Attorneys
Victims of sex and labor trafficking, and what can be done to help them, are the focus of an upcoming educational seminar aimed at Oklahoma lawyers. The seminar, “Modern Slavery in Oklahoma: Why OBA Members Must Help to Eliminate Coerced Labor and Sex for the Profit of Captors,” takes place Thursday, May 9, from 9a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Oklahoma Bar Center in Oklahoma City.

State Bar Association to Reimburse Client Losses
Several Oklahomans who lost money to deceased or dishonest former attorneys will be reimbursed by the Oklahoma Bar Association. The association announced its Clients’ Security Fund will pay more than $100,000 in claims to nine clients of six former attorneys whose acts led to the losses.

Judge Clancy Smith has been elected by her fellow judges as vice presiding judge of the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. Her two-year term will begin Jan. 1, 2013.

New Oklahoma Legislators to Return to ‘School’
Newly elected Oklahoma legislators will convene in Oklahoma City next week to attend Law School for Legislators, a program primarily designed to familiarize non-lawyer legislators with substantive topics in law and practical issues in legislation.

Judge Lewis Named Presiding Judge
Judge David B. Lewis has been elected by his fellow judges as the next presiding judge of the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals. The term, which begins Jan. 1, 2013, is historic because Judge Lewis is the first African-American to serve as presiding judge.

OBA Annual Meeting Concludes, Bar Business Results Announced
Action concluded at noon, Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, after the OBA House of Delegates, held at the Sheraton Hotel in Oklahoma City. It was determined during the meeting that Renée DeMoss of Tulsa will serve as OBA president-elect in 2013, assuming the office of OBA president on Jan. 1, 2014.

Justice Colbert to Serve as Chief Justice
Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Tom Colbert has been elected by his fellow justices to become the next chief justice of the state’s highest court. Justice John Reif will serve as vice chief justice.

Lighting the Way: 2012 Mona Salyer Lambird Spotlight Award Recipients
Since 1996 the Spotlight Awards have been given annually to five women who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession and who have lighted the way for other women. In 1998 the award was named to honor the late Mona Salyer Lambird, the first woman president of the Oklahoma Bar Association, and one of the Award’s first recipients.

Voter Education Key to Retention Ballot
Oklahomans may face uncertainty about the judicial retention ballot they will encounter when they enter the voting booth Nov. 6. The state bar association has introduced, a website designed to explain how the merit retention process works while providing background information about the justices and judges on this year’s merit retention ballot.

New Bar Members Sworn in at State Capitol
The State Capitol was flooded with smiling faces this past Wednesday, Sept. 19, as law students and their families gathered for the Oklahoma Bar Association’s swearing-in ceremony. More than 300 students from OCU School of Law, OU College of Law, TU College of law and a few out-of-state law schools were sworn in as new bar members in the House of Representatives chambers.

State Bar Offers Free Legal Advice to Wildfire Victims
Oklahoma attorneys are stepping in to help those affected by the recent wildfires. Through a program coordinated by the Oklahoma Bar Association, volunteer attorneys will offer no-cost assistance to Oklahomans who experience legal issues related directly to the fires. The free service begins immediately, and is available to residents of Beckham, Cleveland, Creek, Grady, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Payne and Pittsburg counties. Victims may request help at or call (800) 522-8065 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oklahoma lawyers can expect to see a new face at the bar center this month as former Assistant Attorney General Susan Damron Krug takes the reins of the OBA Continuing Legal Education Department.
