2008 Estate Planning, Probate & Trust Section Report

2008 Mid-Year Meeting. The Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Section was an official cosponsor of the OBA Solo and Small Firm Conference held June 19-21, 2008, at Tanglewood Resort, Lake Texoma. The section held its mid-year meeting at the conference on June 20, 2008, the section sponsored three one-hour CLE programs. Gale Allison of Tulsa, presented a program on basic estate planning; Lesa Creveling and Phil Feist both from Tulsa, presented a program on Wealth Preservation Trusts; and Steve Gorin of St. Louis, presented a program on insurance and LLCs. The section also sponsored a hospitality suite for its members and other attendees of the conference.

2008 Advanced Estate Planning Seminar will be held in April of 2009. The section along with the OBA, and ACTEC will cosponsor an advanced estate planning seminar on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Oklahoma Bar Center. The featured speaker for three sessions will be professor Jeffery Pennell of Emory University, Georgia. Mr. Pennell’s presentation will include topics such as “Premortem – late stage – estate planning, How to disinherit a surviving spouse, and Botched charitable planning fixes.” Other sessions will feature speakers from ACTEC such as Bob Kirkland from Overland Park, Kansas, who will be discussing planning for retirement benefits, and Cynda Ottaway of Oklahoma City, presenting an ethics CLE discussing representation letters.

The Advanced Estate Planning Seminar will have six hours of CLE credit, including one hour of ethics credit. The lunch will be sponsored by Arvest Trust Company, N.A., Oklahoma City.

2008 Annual Meeting and Continuing Legal Education. The section will hold its annual meeting on Nov. 20, 2008, in connection with the OBA Annual Meeting on Nov. 19-21, 2008, in Oklahoma City. The section will offer during the annual meeting a free one hour CLE presentation by Tulsa attorney, Michael L. Nemec, and Stillwater attorney, LeAnn Page Drummond, on recent developments in estate planning, probate, trust and guardianship law.

Legislative Committee: The co-chairs of the Section’s Legislative Committee, L. Michele Nelson and David Winslow, were active in developing and monitoring legislative proposals of interest to section members:
