2007 Estate Planning, Probate & Trust Section Report

2007 Mid-Year Meeting. The Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Section was an official co-sponsor of the OBA Solo and Small Firm Conference held June 21-23, 2007, at Tanglewood Resort, Lake Texoma. The section held its mid-year meeting at the conference on June 22, 2007. The section sponsored two one-hour CLE programs by attorney Charles E. King of Amarillo, Texas: "Vehicles of Charitable Giving" and "Estate Planning Revisions in Light of Higher Exemptions." The section also sponsored a hospitality suite for its members and other attendees of the conference.

2007 Advanced Estate Planning Seminar. The section along with the OBA will co-sponsor an advanced estate planning seminar on Nov. 30, 2007, at the Oklahoma Bar Center. The featured speaker for the morning session is attorney Michael V. Bourland of Ft. Worth, Texas. Mr. Bourland's presentation is entitled "Family Business Succession Planning for Family Business Owners and Their Families." This presentation will offer a review of planning and implementation/documentation of various options to pass on a family business. The featured speaker for the afternoon session is attorney Darin N. Digby of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Digby's presentation is entitled "Transfer Planning: What Are You Waiting For... Estate Tax Repeal?" This presentation will offer a discussion and analysis of lifetime estate planning transfers with an emphasis on transfers of property over which the donor wishes to maintain some control.

Six hours of CLE credit, including one hour of ethics credit, will be given for the advanced estate planning seminar. Section members will receive a $25 registration fee discount. Lunch will be sponsored by JPMorgan Chase.

2007 Annual Meeting and Continuing Legal Education. The section will hold its annual meeting on Nov. 8, 2007, in connection with the OBA Annual Meeting on Nov. 7-9, 2007, in Oklahoma City. During the annual meeting the section will offer a free one-hour CLE presentation by Tulsa attorney Michael L. Nemec on recent developments in estate planning, probate, trust and guardianship law.

CLE Seminar Sponsored by the Oklahoma Fellows of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. All section members are invited to a free two-hour CLE program on Nov. 9, 2007, at the Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City presented by the Oklahoma Fellows of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) with the generous support of JPMorgan Chase. Tim P. O'Sullivan, a Wichita, Kan., attorney and ACTEC Fellow, will make a presentation entitled "Family Harmony: An All Too Frequent Casualty of the Estate Planning Process." Deborah Cox, a managing director and wealth advisor for JPMorgan Private Bank in Dallas, Texas, and ACTEC Fellow, will speak on the topic of "How Much Should I Give to My Children?"

The section expresses its great appreciation to the Oklahoma ACTEC Fellows and Jon H. Trudgeon, Oklahoma ACTEC chairperson, for the invitation to this event.

Legislative Committee. The co-chairs of the section's legislative committee, L. Michele Nelson and David Winslow, were active in developing and monitoring legislative proposals of interest to section members.
