WELCOME
FROM THE PRESIDENT

I want to encourage every OBA member to attend our 101st Annual Meeting in Oklahoma City Nov. 2 – 4. The theme for the meeting is “Making a Difference — Fellowship with Friends.” It emphasizes three critical aspects of our profession: 1) We have a responsibility to make a positive difference in the lives of our clients and our community, 2) we need to remember that it’s our friends and colleagues who make a positive difference in our own lives and 3) that attending this meeting, with its great CLE along with opportunities to network and socialize, is a great way to strike that delicate balance between work and life.

Every attorney in my firm will be in Oklahoma City from Tuesday through Friday. Why? We want to get to know you, and we’ll go the extra mile to work with you to improve our profession and the lives of those we represent. In my view, that will not happen if we do not know each other or care enough to spend time with each other at functions like this.

Making a difference through public and community service will be the hot topic at the convention. At Thursday’s Annual Luncheon, retired federal judge and former FBI Director William Sessions will speak. We’ll also welcome as luncheon guests the family moving into the Justice House, which, thanks to Habitat for Humanity and bar members’ efforts, will be completed and dedicated in a ceremony following the luncheon. We’ll get to see up close the impact our service is having on the lives of this deserving family. Bar members are invited to attend the ceremony to be held at the home in Spencer, in the east Oklahoma City metro area. Buses will be available for transportation.

In addition, the convention gives us all an opportunity to become better acquainted with our judiciary. I think our joint meeting on Thursday will be one of the highlights of the convention. Court of Civil Appeals and Judicial Conference Chair Judge Kenneth L. Buettner; Bench and Bar Committee Chair Jack L. Brown and Vice Chair J. William Conger; OBA Executive Director John Morris Williams and Educational Programs Director Donita Douglas have provided great leadership in the programming on Thursday to ensure that the bench and bar have an opportunity to share quality time with one another.

Will you be there? I hope you will. My convention experience will be enhanced if you attend, and I believe you will find your ability to represent others will be strengthened in the camaraderie we will share.

I have said and I will continue to say I am proud to be an Oklahoma lawyer. I am proud that each one of you makes a positive difference in the lives of Oklahomans and others, and I am proud we have this opportunity to celebrate the freedoms and responsibilities we share in the practice of law.

Sincerely,

Mike Evans
OBA President
