CLE & PLENARY SESSION OVERVIEW

Multi-Track CLE

The Wednesday CLE track format, used at the last six Annual Meetings, will be used again this year. At this year’s meeting, members will have an opportunity to select from in excess of 30 different OBA/CLE sessions, including offerings on “Making A Difference.” Five tracks of simultaneous CLE programming will be offered: Making a Difference, Transactional Law, Family Law, Criminal Law and Bridge the Gap.

The five tracks will occur simultaneously in five rooms at the Sheraton Hotel. Each track is divided into 50-minute blocks, and breaks will coincide. Attendees can mix and match programs they attend and put together the CLE that best suits their needs. Ethics and technology sessions are scattered throughout the day. Registrants receive materials for all sessions, not just the sessions attended.

Plenary Session

The Thursday plenary session — “Jury Trial Innovations...Do We Dare?” — will feature G. Thomas Munsterman, director of the Center for Jury Studies for the National Center for State Courts. Mr. Munsterman has been a faculty member at the National Judicial College for 12 years. He will discuss changes in handling jury trials, including innovations that to some are essential and to others are unwelcome. Following Mr. Munsterman’s presentation, there will be a discussion of the issues relating to jury innovations. The panel includes Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice Steven W. Taylor and Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Charles A. Johnson.

The OBA/CLE at the 2005 Annual Meeting is a nine-hour total format and is being offered on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and for three hours on Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 11:40 a.m.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, American poet, lecturer and essayist, said, “The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” Oklahoma attorneys make a difference in the day-to-day lives of Oklahoma citizens and communities; this meeting will provide inspiration and training in continuing to provide those meaningful contributions.
